Australian point visas are special types of visas that use a points-based system to select skilled workers who want to live and work in Australia. Instead of just applying and waiting, you need to score enough points to be eligible. Here’s what you need to know.

What is the Points-Based System?

Australia uses a points test to assess and select skilled workers for migration. Points are awarded based on factors including:

  • Age
  • English language proficiency
  • Work experience
  • Educational qualifications
  • Australian study experience
  • Professional year completion
  • Partner skills
  • State/territory nomination

The minimum points threshold is typically 65, but scoring higher can improve your chances of receiving an invitation to apply.

Key Visa Subclasses

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

This permanent visa allows you to live and work anywhere in Australia without sponsorship. It’s highly competitive, requiring a high points score and an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List, as well as a positive skills assessment.

Learn more about Subclass 189 here.

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

Similar to the 189 visa but requires nomination by a state or territory government. This nomination adds 5 points to your score and may have lower threshold requirements than the 189.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)

This provisional visa requires either state/territory nomination or family sponsorship in a designated regional area. It provides 15 additional points but restricts you to living and working in regional Australia for at least 3 years.

Application Process

  1. Skills Assessment: Have your qualifications and skills assessed by the relevant authority for your occupation.
  2. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI): Create a profile in the SkillSelect system.
  3. Receive an Invitation: Once you’ve submitted your EOI, you have to wait to receive an invitation.
  4. Lodge Visa Application: Submit your formal application with supporting documentation.
  5. Medical and Character Checks: Complete required health and character assessments.
  6. Visa Decision: Wait for the Department of Home Affairs to process your application.

A very important aspect of this visa type to consider is that you can’t simply apply for the visa and await a decision (on a bridging visa).

The reality is that meeting the minimum 65 points doesn’t guarantee an invitation. You might wait months or years, or never receive one at all.

And it’s not even your score that matters the most. We’ve heard stories of people with scores of 90+ never receiving an invitation, while another person with the minimum 65 points got an invitation in a few months.

The points-based visa should be viewed as a Plan B, not your primary migration strategy.

It’s best if you get another visa first (like a sponsored or student visa), submit your EOI while on your existing visa, and await an invitation.

This way, you’re not left in limbo if an invitation never arrives, and you have a pathway to permanent residency regardless.

Just remember: none of this is legal advice!

Tips for Maximizing Your Points

  • Improve your English language test scores
  • Gain additional work experience in your nominated occupation
  • Obtain higher qualifications
  • Consider state/territory nomination
  • Apply while you’re in the optimal age bracket (25-33 years)

Point Visa FAQs

An EOI is a preliminary application submitted through SkillSelect indicating your interest in applying for a skilled visa. It contains your points score and other relevant information.

This is then evaluated by the department to decide whether you”ll receive an invitation to apply for a visa.

The minimum points threshold is 65 points for skilled migration visas (subclasses 189, 190, and 491). However, due to competition, receiving an invitation typically requires a significantly higher score, often 80-90+ points depending on your occupation.

Applicants aged 25-32 receive the maximum 30 points. Points decrease for other age groups: 25 points for ages 18-24 and 33-39, 15 points for ages 40-44, and 0 points for ages 45-49.
