Your Working Holiday is Ending: The Exit Plan That Protects Your Record
Can you stay in Australia after a working holiday visa? The last lawful day, the day-after trap, the 30-day exit checklist — and the change to the return plan (Sep 2026).
Your visa is lawful on its expiry date — the day after is a different story. A clean, timely exit keeps every future application simple.
A question we hear every week in the final stretch of a working holiday: can I work on my visa’s last day, and is it bad if I fly out one day after it ends? Here is how the exit actually works — and the one thing that just changed.
Your visa runs to — and includes — its last date
Your visa is in effect through to, and including, its expiry date. On a 417 or 462, that final date is a lawful day — you can be in Australia, and you can work within your conditions (including the six-months-per-employer limit).
From the day after expiry the picture changes completely: if no other visa or bridging visa is in effect, you are unlawful in Australia.
It does not need to be dramatic to matter — even a short unlawful period is disclosable on every future Australian visa application, and decision-makers can see it.
| Point | Leave while lawful | Unlawful from day one |
|---|---|---|
| Your record | Stays clean — nothing to disclose | Disclosable on every future application, and visible |
| Coming back | The final-lap visit still works as a visit | The 'come back and lodge onshore' plan no longer holds (17 Sep 2026 change) |
The leave-and-return plan — and the change to watch
The classic route for a final lap of Australia: fly out, apply for a visitor visa from outside Australia, and come back for one last road trip. Offshore applications avoid the onshore-switching complications that can follow temporary visa holders.
The change: on 17 September 2026, the Government announced that visitor visas granted after a start date (still to be announced) will carry the No Further Stay condition (condition 8503). That condition blocks applying onshore for almost any other visa — the protection visa is the one exception.
Visas granted before the start date keep the conditions on their grant letter, and the change does not affect offshore applications. So the final-lap visit still works as a visit — it is the “come back and then lodge onshore” plan that no longer holds. Official detail: Home Affairs — migration policy changes.
If you want to stay on instead of visiting, the pathways are sponsored or skilled visas — see the work visa guide — and remember to lodge before your WHV expires.
Existing visas keep their conditions; the offshore route is unaffected.
A 30-day exit checklist
- Check your visa expiry date and conditions in VEVO — not from memory or a booking email.
- Do not book the departure flight for the day after your visa ends unless another visa is already in effect.
- If you want to stay longer, lodge the next application before expiry — a bridging visa can keep you lawful while it is decided.
- Keep payslips, bank records and tax documents — the super system keeps its own records too: future visa applications ask for the history.
- Sort your superannuation before you go — departing working holiday makers can claim their super through the ATO’s DASP process.
- If you leave on time and want to return, apply for the visitor visa offshore and address why you will leave at the end of it.

The questions underneath it all
The uncertainty in the questions we get is about the fundamentals — what the last lawful day is, what counts as overstaying, what a return trip needs to look like. The answers are straightforward, but they need to be applied to your dates and your plans.
Common questions
Can I stay in Australia after my working holiday visa ends? Not on the same visa. You would need another visa in effect — the usual routes are a visitor visa applied for offshore, or lodging a further substantive visa before expiry so a bridging visa keeps you lawful.
Can I work on the last day of my visa? Yes — the expiry date is a lawful day, and you can work within your conditions, including the six-months-per-employer limit.
What if I fly out one day after my visa ends? From the day after expiry, with no other visa in effect, you are unlawful in Australia — even briefly. That period is disclosable on every future application.
Can I come back to Australia after leaving? Yes — the final-lap visit works as a visit: apply for the visitor visa offshore. What the 17 September 2026 change ends is the come-back-and-lodge-onshore route.
